Gun maintenance

A clean barrel shoots better. It really is that simple. At Hop.nl you will find cleaning products, oils, greases, cleaning rods and tools from Bore Tech and IOSSO. Everything you need to keep your firearm in top condition, selected by shooters who know what works.

Why maintenance matters

Every time you fire a round, copper and carbon residue builds up in your barrel. A few shots, no problem. But let it accumulate session after session and it starts affecting your accuracy. Copper fouling changes the internal diameter of your bore, even if only slightly. At 100 metres you might not notice. At 600 you will.

Regular cleaning keeps your groups tight and extends barrel life. It does not have to take hours. With the right products and a consistent routine you are done in ten minutes.

Cleaning rods and bore snakes

It starts with a decent cleaning rod. Sounds basic, but a bad rod damages your bore. We stock cleaning rods and bore snakes from Bore Tech. Their carbon fibre rods are rigid enough to push through smoothly yet flexible enough not to harm the rifling. The coating prevents abrasive particles from sticking to the rod surface.

Bore snakes are useful for a quick clean at the range between strings. Not a replacement for a proper cleaning session at home, but a practical in between solution. One or two pulls and your bore is clean enough for the next string.

Cleaning solvents

This is where the real work happens. Removing copper, dissolving carbon, getting lead out. Each type of fouling needs a different solvent. In our cleaning fluids category you will find products from Bore Tech and IOSSO. Bore Tech Eliminator is one of the most widely used copper and carbon removers among precision shooters. Ammonia free, so it does not attack your bore, but it absolutely gets the job done. For stubborn copper fouling there is Cu+2, their heavier duty copper remover.

IOSSO makes strong products for carbon removal. Their bore cleaners are popular with shooters who want a genuinely clean barrel without aggressive chemicals.

Oils and greases

After cleaning, your barrel needs protection. Bare metal corrodes. You do not want that, especially not on a precision barrel you paid hundreds of euros for. In our oils and greases category you will find protective oils for your bore and lubricants for moving parts. A thin film of oil in your barrel guards against rust and moisture. On your bolt and other moving parts you want a light lubricant that does not thicken in cold weather.

One thing to keep in mind: too much oil in your bore affects your first shot. Many precision shooters dry patch their barrel before shooting and accept that the first round is a fouler. What you do with that is personal preference, but be aware of it.

Tools

Beyond cleaning solvents, our firearm tools category has everything else you need for maintaining your firearm. Brushes, patches, patch holders, chamber cleaning tools, action cleaning gear. Having the right tools makes the difference between a quick and thorough clean and half an hour of frustration with the wrong size brush.

Our cleaning routine

Everyone has their own method, but here is what we do after a range session. First a few wet patches with copper solvent. Let it soak for five minutes. Then dry patches until they come out clean. After that a few patches with carbon solvent if we have shot a lot. Dry patch again. Finish with a thin coat of protective oil. Done.

That covers the bore. The bolt gets an occasional wipe with a light lubricant, and the outside of the rifle gets a once over with an oiled cloth. Nothing complicated, but you do have to actually do it. A barrel you neglect deteriorates faster than you would expect.
