Riflescopes for precision shooting and long range
A quality riflescope is the heart of your precision setup. Whether you're shooting at 100 meters during club matches or pushing out to 1000+ meters at F-Class competitions, the quality of your optics largely determines your results. At Hop.nl we specialize in riflescopes that meet the demands of serious shooters.
Brands and price ranges
Our riflescope selection covers various price ranges, ensuring there's a suitable choice for every budget and skill level.
Premium riflescopes
For shooters who demand the best, we offer high-end riflescopes from Vortex and Element Optics. The Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36x56 is the absolute flagship for long range shooting. With HD glass, XR Plus coatings and L-Tec+ zero-stop turrets, this riflescope delivers unmatched clarity and reliable tracking. The Element Optics Theos 6-36x56 is another top-tier model featuring the APR-2D FFP reticle, developed after three years of intensive R&D.
Mid-range riflescopes
The Vortex Viper series offers excellent value for money. The Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50 is particularly popular among F-Class shooters and precision enthusiasts. The EBR-7C MRAD reticle provides sufficient holdover marks without cluttering the view. The Arken EP-5 5-25x56 also falls into this category, delivering Japanese ED glass at a competitive price.
Entry-level models
Getting started with long range shooting doesn't have to cost a fortune. The Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50 FFP offers an FFP reticle and MRAD turrets at an accessible price point. The Arken SH-4J Gen II 6-24x50 is another solid entry option with illuminated reticle and the AZS zero-stop system.
FFP versus SFP: which focal plane suits you?
When choosing a riflescope, you'll inevitably encounter the choice between First Focal Plane (FFP) and Second Focal Plane (SFP). With FFP riflescopes, the reticle scales with magnification, meaning MRAD or MOA values remain accurate regardless of your magnification setting. This is essential for long range precision shooting where you want to switch quickly between magnifications without recalculating holdover values.
SFP riflescopes keep the reticle at a constant size. The measurement values are only accurate at one specific magnification, usually maximum. For hunting and recreational shooting this works perfectly fine, especially if you always shoot at maximum magnification and use turrets rather than reticle holds.
MRAD or MOA?
Both measurement systems work excellently, the key is consistency. MRAD (milliradians) is popular in Europe because it calculates metrically: 0.1 MRAD equals approximately 1 cm at 100 meters. MOA (Minutes of Angle) is the traditional American system where 1 MOA equals approximately 2.9 cm at 100 meters. Choose one system and stick with it, including for your ballistics app and shooting data.
Choosing magnification for your shooting distance
The right magnification depends on your typical shooting distances:
- 100 meters: 10-16x is more than sufficient. Higher magnification often works against you because you see every small movement amplified.
- 300 meters: At least 12-20x. Parallax correction becomes important here.
- 600 meters: 20-25x is not luxury but necessity. FFP becomes truly valuable at this range.
- 1000+ meters: 25-36x for F-Class and ELR. A 56mm objective ensures optimal light transmission.
Key specifications explained
Objective diameter
The number after the 'x' (for example 56 in 6-36x56) indicates the front lens diameter. A larger objective captures more light, resulting in a brighter image at twilight. The downside is increased weight. For stationary range shooting, 56mm is ideal. For hunting where you walk a lot, 50mm or even 44mm may be more practical.
Tube diameter
Most precision riflescopes have a 30mm or 34mm tube. A 34mm tube offers more internal adjustment range, important at extreme distances where you need significant elevation. When choosing scope rings, ensure you match the correct diameter.
Eye relief
The distance between your eye and the ocular at which you see a full image. With powerful calibers like .338 Lapua or .300 Win Mag, you want generous eye relief (90-100mm) to prevent scope bite.
Riflescopes by discipline
F-Class shooting
F-Class shooters benefit from maximum magnification and a large objective. The Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36x56 or the Element Optics Theos 6-36x56 are the benchmarks here. The stable track system ensures precise corrections shot after shot.
PRS and dynamic shooting
Precision Rifle Series demands versatility. You switch quickly between near and far, often under time pressure. An LPVO (Low Power Variable Optic) like the Vortex Viper PST Gen II 1-6x24 or a 3-15x model provides the flexibility you need.
Benchrest
Benchrest shooters seek absolute precision at shorter distances (100-300m). High magnification and crystal clear glass are essential. The Delta Optical Stryker HD 5-50x56 offers extreme magnification for the finest detail.
Hunting
Hunters have different priorities: lightweight, robust and reliable in all weather conditions. The Vortex Viper HD series and Diamondback models are popular choices here. A BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator) reticle can be useful for quick shots at varying distances.
Accessories for your riflescope
A riflescope alone isn't enough. For optimal performance you need the right accessories:
- Scope rings from quality brands like Spuhr or ERA-TAC
- Electronic levels to prevent cant
- Laser rangefinders for precise distance measurement
- Bipods for a stable shooting platform
Service and warranty
All riflescopes at Hop.nl come with full factory warranty. Vortex offers the legendary VIP warranty: a lifetime, unconditional warranty covering all damage regardless of cause. Element Optics, Arken and other brands also provide comprehensive warranty terms.
