Gen 1 Maxi muzzle brake - Botnia Solutions
The Maxi is the model that put Botnia Solutions on the map in the PRS world. Originally designed for heavier calibres, but now the preferred choice of many PRS shooters, even on smaller calibres like 6mm and 6.5 Creedmoor. The reason is straightforward: the extra weight at the front of the barrel improves rifle balance and dampens muzzle whip. Some shooters remove chassis weights as a result, ending up with a lighter overall system that actually handles better.
How the Maxi works
The operating principle differs from conventional brakes. Where most muzzle brakes use wide exhaust ports that spread gas in a cone, the Botnia uses long, directional channels that guide gas in a tight line. The square profile plays a part in that. During development Botnia tested round and square profiles and found that a cylindrical brake cannot redirect gas effectively enough. Too much gas escapes upward and downward with side ports on a round profile.
The ports face upward. That pushes the barrel down and reduces muzzle rise, but without the destructive vertical forces that with aggressive brakes cause bipod jump, stress bedding and visibly bend the barrel in slow motion. Rifles are designed to absorb linear recoil forces, not vertical stresses. The Botnia works with that principle rather than against it.
No top ports
The Gen 1 series deliberately has no ports on top. That was a requirement from the PRS shooters who co-developed the design. Carbon build up in top ports affects your zero in ways that are difficult to predict. Side ports do not have that problem. For a brake aimed at the precision shooting community the choice was clear.
Manufacturing
The body is produced using Selective Laser Melting, a 3D printing process that enables complex internal geometries impossible to achieve with conventional milling. The threads and bore are then CNC finished for optimal fit and tolerances. The bore is reamed to near 0% runout at the muzzle. That matters, because a brake that is not perfectly aligned with the barrel affects your accuracy.

What is included
Every Botnia Maxi ships in a hard case with laser cut foam. The multitool fits in a range bag and besides the correct size for tightening the brake also has a bit holder and a 1/4-3/8 inch socket for a torque wrench. The two bubble levels are for mounting the brake level: one on the scope turret, one on the brake itself. That way you know the brake is level relative to your scope and that your zero is repeatable when removing and remounting.
Installation
Clamp your barrel in a barrel vise, apply a thin layer of grease to the threads, hand tighten the brake and use the included multitool or a torque wrench to secure it. Align using the bubble levels. Do not use loctite. Check after your first range session that everything is still tight.
Maintenance
Carbon build up inside the brake is normal. For the Cerakote version use a carbon remover such as Bore Tech C4 or Slip 2000 Carbon Killer. These are safe on Cerakote and work well in an ultrasonic cleaner. For the stainless version you can also use CLR in an ultrasonic bath, but rinse thoroughly afterwards and apply a layer of oil. Do not use CLR on Cerakote as it will damage the coating.
Who is the Maxi for
PRS shooters who want maximum control, even on smaller calibres. Shooters on heavier calibres like .308, 6.5 Creedmoor or .300 Win Mag who want to drastically reduce their recoil. And anyone who wants to keep looking through their scope during recoil instead of losing the image. If you want to see your trace and follow your impact, the Maxi is the brake that makes it possible.
