Improved Gen II design
The Generation II design offers significant improvements over earlier expander dies. The mandrel is completely captured within the die body, preventing it from coming loose or shifting during the expanding process. An O-ring in the die cap allows the mandrel to "float" slightly and self-centre within the case neck. This results in better concentricity and more consistent neck tension.
The stainless steel construction guarantees years of trouble-free use. The included Split Lock Ring ensures secure mounting in your reloading press without the die loosening during work.
Applications for precision reloaders
The Sinclair Expander Die Body serves multiple purposes in the reloading process:
As preparation for neck turning, the expander die is indispensable. By first expanding the case neck with an expander mandrel (.001" under bullet diameter), the case fits perfectly on the turning mandrel (.002" under bullet diameter). This prevents galling and makes the turning process smoother and more precise.
For setting consistent neck tension, you use the expander die after resizing. Sizing down with a bushing die and then expanding provides predictable bullet pull for every case. Many F-Class, benchrest and ELR shooters apply this technique for optimal precision.
With new brass, the expander die removes dents and imperfections in the neck area. Even premium brass from Lapua or Norma can have transport damage that you correct with this tool.
For "necking up" cases to the next calibre, the expander die is equally suitable. Think of converting .220 Russian to 6mm PPC or .243 to 6.5mm.
Usage and compatibility
The die body fits any reloading press with standard 7/8"-14 threads. Insert the desired mandrel into the die, do not tighten the cap too firmly so the O-ring can perform its self-centring function. Apply a small amount of lubricant before use; Imperial Sizing Wax or Hornady One Shot works excellently. Imperial Dry Lube provides an even smoother operation according to many users.
All mandrels are sold separately. Choose the mandrel that matches your calibre. This die body accepts mandrels for calibres from .17 to .338. For larger calibres (.35 to .50), a separate Large Caliber die body is available.
