Flash Bang AR500 hit indicator - Caldwell
At 300 metres you hear steel ring. At 600 sometimes just about. At 1000 you hear nothing, and seeing whether you hit is nearly impossible without a spotting scope. Even with a spotter it is not always clear, especially with small calibre on heavy steel where the impact is barely visible.
The Caldwell Flash Bang solves that. Simple.
How it works
The Flash Bang contains a sensor that detects vibrations. Every time a bullet strikes your steel target, the sensor registers the impact and 10 bright green LEDs light up. They are bright enough to see at thousands of metres, even in full daylight. The sensor is sensitive enough to detect even .223 impacts at 1000 yards, which is impressive given the limited energy such a light projectile still carries at that distance.
Mounting
Two strips of heavy-duty hook and loop are included. One strip goes along the edge on the back of your steel target. The other sits on the front of the Flash Bang itself. You mount the indicator so that the LEDs just peek around the edge of the target and are visible to the shooter, while the housing sits behind the steel. The steel protects the indicator from direct hits. Cleverly designed, simple to use.
The Flash Bang fits any steel target larger than 12.7 cm (5 inches). IPSC targets, round gongs, silhouettes, it does not matter as long as there is an edge to stick the hook and loop to.
Battery life
Three AA batteries, included. Caldwell rates the battery life at 30,000 impacts. That is a lot of shots. Even if you train every week, you will get months out of them. And when they run out you replace them in a minute. No charging hassle, no special batteries, just AAs from the shop.

Practical advice
Mount the Flash Bang so the LEDs face the shooter. Sounds obvious, but on a swinging target or one that moves after impact the visibility can change. Stick the hook and loop firmly and check after a few sessions whether it is still holding. The adhesive is strong, but in extreme heat or cold it can loosen. An extra strip of industrial hook and loop from the hardware store as backup never hurts.
