Master Gunsmith Torx screw kit 200-piece - Pachmayr
A stripped screw head on a scope mount is more than an annoyance. Either you cannot get the screw to proper torque, or you cannot get it out again later. That is one reason more and more bases and rings now ship with Torx screws. This Pachmayr kit keeps those screws on hand in the sizes you are most likely to need.
Why a Torx head
A screwdriver slips out of a slotted screw all too easily. A hex head is a big step up, but on small sizes the hex can round out if your bit is worn or not seated properly. The six lobes of a Torx head transfer force through almost vertical flanks, so the bit is pushed out of the head far less. That lets you bring the screw up to torque cleanly and repeatably. For small screws tightened with a torque driver, that is exactly what you want.
What is in the kit
The kit covers 20 sizes, ten of each. Every thread is included with a T-10 drive. For #8-40 there is a second series with a larger T-15 drive, so you can match whatever your base or rings already use.
#6-40 fillister head T-10: 3/8" and 1/2"
#6-40 oval head T-10: 1/4" and 3/8"
#6-48 fillister head T-10: 1/4", 3/8" and 9/16"
#6-48 oval head T-10: 1/4" and 3/8"
#8-40 fillister head T-10: 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2"
#8-40 oval head T-10: 1/4" and 1/2"
#8-40 fillister head T-15: 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2"
#8-40 oval head T-15: 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2"
A fillister head sits proud of the surface with a flat top. An oval head sits partly in a countersunk hole and has a domed top. So check which type your base or rings call for. In metric, 1/4" is about 6.4 mm, 3/8" about 9.5 mm, 1/2" about 12.7 mm and 9/16" about 14.3 mm.
Thread gauge and shortening jig
The included thread gauge lets you identify the thread of a screw or hole. The same gauge works as a jig for shortening a screw: thread it in and grind off the excess. That way you can trim a screw that is slightly too long, so it does not protrude inside the receiver.
Practical use
You need a T-10 bit for these screws, plus a T-15 for the #8-40 series. Both are part of the Wheeler Hex/Torx P-Handle Set. Tighten the screws to the torque specified by the maker of your base or rings, ideally with a torque driver. Clean and degrease the receiver threads first, and if you use a threadlocker, go for a medium strength one.
The tweezers make it easy to pick the small screws out of their compartments. Individual screws are not sold separately. If you prefer hex screws, Pachmayr also offers a Master Gunsmith kit with hex head screws.
