Master Gunsmith screw kit 277-piece - Pachmayr
Anyone who works on their own rifles knows the moment. You take off an old base or a sight, and one screw turns out to be damaged, missing or just too short. A replacement with the right American thread is not something you pick up at the hardware store. Pachmayr puts the sizes you need most often in one box, so you are not stuck waiting for a single screw to arrive.
The kit holds 23 types of screw, twelve of each. That makes 276 screws, and with the tweezers you get to 277 pieces. The lid carries a chart of every compartment, with thread, head type and length.
Fillister and oval heads in #6-48 and #8-40
Most of the kit is made up of #6-48 and #8-40 screws, the threads you run into on scope bases, rings and plenty of other rifle parts. The #6-48 fillister and oval heads come in seven lengths each. That almost always gives you a screw that fits just right, long enough to grip without protruding inside the receiver. The #8-40 fillister and oval heads come in three lengths each.
A fillister head sits proud of the surface with a flat top. An oval head sits partly in a countersunk hole and has a domed top. Always use the type that matches the hole in your part.
Plug screws for unused holes
Take a base or sight off your rifle and you are left with open tapped holes in the receiver or barrel. Dirt and moisture get in, and it does not look finished. The plug screws in #6-48, #8-40 and #10-32 close those holes off cleanly. Pachmayr labels them "plug or set" on the lid, so they also work as set screws.
Slotted screws, with the right tools
Every screw in this kit is slotted. That matches the original finish on many hunting rifles and on older bases and sights. Do use a screwdriver that fits the slot exactly, in both width and thickness. A blade that is too narrow or tapered will cam out and mark the screw head or the finish on your rifle. The Wheeler Spacesaver screwdriver set includes six flat bits for different slot sizes.
Clean and degrease the threads in the part before fitting a new screw. If you use a threadlocker, go for a medium strength one so the screw can still come out later. The tweezers make it easy to pick the smallest screws out of their compartments.
