AR500 Rimfire KYL Challenge resetting target - Caldwell
Paper targets are useful. But honestly, after a while they get boring. The KYL Challenge from Caldwell is the opposite of boring. Eight steel targets in a row, each smaller than the last. The first target is 2 inches, the last a quarter inch. Six millimetres of steel. With a .22 LR at 25 or 50 metres that is a serious challenge.
The game concept
KYL stands for Know Your Limits. Here is how it works. You start at the largest target and work your way right. Each target you hit is one point. Maximum eight points per round. But if you miss, your score resets to zero. Everything lost. The question is not just whether you can hit, but whether you know when to stop. Hit four targets but not sure about the fifth? Stop and take your four points. Try it anyway and miss, you have nothing. That is the game. Know your own limits.
With multiple shooters it becomes competitive. Who dares go furthest? Who knows their own limits best? It is the kind of challenge that turns an afternoon at the range from practice into a match.
AR500 steel
The targets are made from certified ¼" AR500 steel. That is the same material used for heavy duty shooting targets in the shooting sports. It can handle a lifetime of rimfire impacts, including .22 Magnum and .17 HMR. No dents, no holes, no replacement needed. The yellow powder coat protects against rust and makes the targets visible against virtually any background.
Frame and transport
The frame consists of ½" steel tubing connected with polyurethane joints. Setup takes a few minutes with no tools. Taking it down and packing up is just as fast. The entire system folds flat and fits in a boot or on the back seat. Bring it to the range, set it down, and you are ready to shoot.

Safety
Only use rimfire ammunition on this target. Centrefire calibres will damage the steel and create an unsafe situation through fragmentation and ricochets. Do not use lead air gun pellets or FMJ ammunition on steel targets. Always maintain sufficient distance, minimum 15 metres for rimfire. Wear eye protection.
Who is it for
.22 LR shooters who want more than poking holes in paper. Families heading to the range together who want to make it a game. Clubs looking for a fun competition on the side. Or precision rimfire shooters who want to test their small bore skills on progressively smaller targets. Hitting that ¼" target at 50 metres is easier said than done.
