Pilot for the AMP annealer

AMP pilots are essential for correctly annealing brass cases with the AMP Mark II (DB) induction annealer. Each pilot number is specific to a particular calibre or cartridge family. The pilot sets the insertion depth of the case into the magnetic field, and this is critical: a difference of just a few millimetres can result in a significant variation in annealed hardness. Simply thread the pilot all the way into the boss on the machine, no further adjustment needed.

Some pilots are shared between multiple cartridges with similar case dimensions. For example, pilot #11 fits .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 7-08 Remington, and .308 Winchester. Pilot #17 is specific to 6.5 Creedmoor and 6mm Creedmoor. Always check the pilot table below to confirm which number matches your cartridge.

Why is the correct pilot so important?

With induction annealing, the neck and shoulder of the case are heated by a focused magnetic field. The pilot ensures the case is placed at exactly the same depth in that field every time. Using the wrong pilot means too much or too little material is heated, resulting in inconsistent results. Combined with the AZTEC mode on the AMP annealer, which calculates the optimal annealing programme for each case, the correct pilot is the foundation for a perfect result.
