Base referenced priming for reloaders who will not compromise on consistency
The PCPS-Wolfgang is the flagship of Derraco Engineering's precision primer seating line. Where most primer seaters measure seating depth from the rim of the case, this one moves the reference point to the base. That difference sounds small, but on the range it shows up as cleaner ignition and lower spread in your velocities. The tool is named after Wolfgang Wollmer, a mechanical engineer and shooter from Worms in Germany, and it is built for reloaders who want to control things down to the hundredth of a millimetre.
The Wolfgang mechanism
At the heart of this seater is a floating, by-passing anvil that Derraco calls the Wolfgang mechanism. It shifts the datum from the rim to the base of the case, exactly where the primer pocket sits. Rim thickness varies from case to case and from brand to brand, and with rim referenced tools that variation feeds straight into your seating depth. By measuring from the base you take that variable out and seat every primer at an even depth relative to the bottom of the pocket. If you want to go back to a classic reference, you simply disable the Wolfgang feature with the included adapter, so you get two tools in one.
You set the seating depth with a detent micrometer in 0.01mm increments, so you can find and repeat your setting exactly. The tool is machined from 420 steel with extra machining and heat treatment, which you feel in the tight, play free action. Derraco deliberately makes the Wolfgang in small batches rather than mass production.
Who the PCPS-Wolfgang is for
This primer seater is made for the serious precision reloader, think F-Class, benchrest, PRS and ELR shooters who control every step of their loading process. Consistent primer seating is one of the most underrated factors behind low ES and SD, and that is exactly where base referencing makes the difference. If you work with different brands of brass or with cases whose rim thickness is not uniform, the Wolfgang removes a variable that is otherwise hard to control.
Compatibility and use
The PCPS-Wolfgang works with LEE priming shell holders and with primer tubes that have an outer diameter of 7.92mm, such as the Dillon tubes and similar standards under 8.00mm. Please note that primer tubes and priming shell holders are not included with the tool, you order those separately so you pick exactly the calibers and accessories you need. There is no printed manual at the moment, you download the latest instructions from the website. Fill the primer tube, choose your shell holder, set the micrometer to the depth you want and seat your primers one by one with a constant, controllable motion.
