Redding Type S Bushing Full Length Sizing Die
The Redding Type S Bushing Full Length Sizing Die brings an advanced level of precision to your handloading. This American-made die combines full-length case sizing with interchangeable bushings, allowing you to size the entire case while controlling neck diameter to within 0.001 inch accuracy in a single operation. For F-Class shooters, PRS competitors, and benchrest enthusiasts who accept no compromises.
Why Choose a Type S Bushing Full Length Die
Interchangeable bushings for optimal neck tension
The bushing system forms the heart of this die. Sizing bushings are available in 0.001-inch increments, enabling you to match neck tension perfectly to the wall thickness of your brass. Unlike conventional full-length dies, you determine exactly how much the neck gets sized. This prevents excessive brass deformation and significantly extends case life.
Redding offers two bushing types: heat-treated steel for standard use and Titanium Nitride coated bushings for minimal stress on the brass during sizing. The TiN coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction, resulting in a smoother sizing process and less wear on both the bushing and case neck.
Self-centering bushing for improved concentricity
The bushing has 0.003 to 0.004 inch clearance in the die, allowing it to self-center on the case neck during sizing. This self-centering action measurably improves the concentricity of your loaded rounds. Less runout means more consistent flight paths and smaller groups at distance.
Adjustable decapping rod
The decapping rod is adjustable in length, providing two key advantages. First, it determines bushing position and therefore which portion of the neck gets sized. Partial neck sizing is easily configured. Second, you can adjust the decapping pin protrusion for reliable primer removal regardless of which caliber brass you're using.
Shoulder bump control
By adjusting the die higher or lower in your press, you determine exactly how much the shoulder gets bumped. For ultimate precision in datum line headspace, Redding offers the Competition Shellholder Set. This set contains shellholders in various heights, allowing you to fine-tune shoulder bump in 0.002-inch increments without changing die adjustment.
Dual functionality as body die
Simply removing the bushing transforms the Type S Full Length Die into a body die. This is ideal for shooters who want to size the case body and shoulder without affecting neck diameter. Especially valuable for bolt-action rifles where you combine neck sizing with periodic body sizing.
Determining the correct bushing size
Measure the outside diameter of your loaded cartridges with a precision micrometer. Subtract 0.002 inch from this measurement. This correction accounts for brass spring-back and creates optimal neck tension for bullet seating.
Example: You measure a neck diameter of 0.294 inch on your loaded .308 Winchester cartridges. The ideal bushing size is 0.292 inch. For slightly more grip, you might choose 0.291 inch.
Keep in mind that different brass manufacturers have different wall thicknesses. Lapua, Peterson, and Norma cases may each require a different bushing for the same neck tension. Sort your brass by manufacturer and preferably by lot number for the most consistent results.
Case preparation for optimal results
Benchrest and competition shooters know that case uniformity is the secret ingredient for precision. Maximize your Type S Bushing Die results by following these preparations:
Sort your cases by manufacturer and preferably by lot number. Cases with uniform neck wall thickness remain straighter throughout the entire reloading and firing cycle. Trim case mouths square and chamfer both inside and outside. Clean the inside of the neck with a neck brush to remove abrasive residue before sizing.
Installation and adjustment
Die preparation
All Redding dies are protected by a rust-preventive film that must be removed before use. Clean the die interior with quality bore solvent and a brass brush. Dry thoroughly with a clean patch.
Bushing installation
- Drop the desired bushing into the die body
- Insert the decapping rod until you feel it contact the bushing
- Back the rod away from the bushing by 1/16 turn and lock in place
- This 0.003 to 0.004 inch clearance is essential for self-centering action
Checking decapping pin position
The decapping pin should protrude 1/8 to 3/16 inch from the die body for reliable primer removal. A handy gauge is the thickness of two nickels. Adjust overall decapping rod length if necessary.
Lubrication
Apply a thin coat of quality sizing wax to the case body, avoiding the shoulder. Use a dry lubricant such as Imperial Dry Neck Lube or Application Media for the neck. When using Titanium Nitride bushings, minimal lubrication is sufficient.
Die adjustment in press
Install the die to make firm contact with the shellholder when the ram is at its highest position. Size a lubricated case and check it in your rifle's chamber. Adjust die height to position the shoulder precisely where needed for your specific chamber.
Applications
Precision competition
F-Class, PRS, benchrest, and ELR shooters benefit from the consistent results this die delivers. The combination of exact neck tension control, improved concentricity, and precise shoulder bump produces ammunition meeting the highest standards.
Long-range hunting
Hunters operating at extended distances who depend on that one shot benefit from the reliability of precision handloaded ammunition. The Type S Bushing FL Die ensures consistent chambering and extraction, essential in the field.
Multiple brass brands
Shooters using various brass brands can optimally size each batch with a selection of bushings. One die, multiple bushings, perfect results regardless of brass manufacturer.
