Aggressive cleaning power from walnut shells
Walnut shell granulate is harder than corn cob media and therefore tackles heavy fouling more effectively. The Tufnut Plus variant is additionally pre-treated with a rouge polishing compound, which means your cases come out not only clean but with a respectable shine as well. This makes the Tufnut Plus a versatile product that combines the cleaning strength of walnut with the polishing effect of a treated medium.
The granulate has a 12/20 grit size. This fine grit penetrates into all areas of the case, including the primer pocket when you remove spent primers beforehand with a decapping die.
Walnut versus corn cob: when to use which?
When it comes to dry case cleaning, there are two common media types. Walnut granulate like this Lyman Tufnut Plus is more aggressive and removes stubborn fouling, carbon and oxidation faster. Corn cob media such as the Lyman Corncob Plus is softer and produces the highest shine, but struggles more with heavily soiled brass.
Many reloaders use a two-step method: first a session with walnut media to strip away all heavy fouling, followed by a second session with corn cob media for the final polish. This delivers the best possible results. If you prefer using just one type of media, the Tufnut Plus is a strong all-rounder that combines cleaning and polishing in one step.
Using Tufnut Plus in your reloading workflow
Fill your vibratory case tumbler with enough Tufnut Plus media to fully cover your cases. Depending on the level of fouling, 2 to 6 hours is typically sufficient for a thorough clean. Heavily fouled cases with significant carbon buildup may require a longer session.
Note: walnut media produces more dust than corn cob media. It is advisable to place your tumbler in a well-ventilated area. The media can be reused through multiple cleaning cycles. When the granulate turns dark and saturated and no longer cleans effectively, it is time for replacement.
After tumbling, separate your cases from the media using a media separator. Always check that no granulate remains inside the cases before you start reloading.
Compatible with all common calibres
Lyman Tufnut Plus media works with all common rifle and pistol calibres, from .223 Remington and 6.5 Creedmoor to .308 Winchester and .45 ACP. The media is compatible with all vibratory case tumblers on the market.
